(We decided to leave the area, the Caldor smoke too much to bear, and I couldn’t help but think of my ancestors who likely had to flee fire as Cossacks charged through their villages on horseback, torching their homes. On each step of our small exodus—so much smaller than my ancestors’ flight to safety—I couldn’t help but imagine our home, the woods around it, aflame. I imagined this so much that when we finally returned, I was shocked to find our neighborhood uncharred, shocked to find it green, even, wild strawberry leaves still tender across the forest floor. Strawberries were used in Ashkenazi herbalism, too; my ancestors likely made infusions of the dried leaves and berries for pain in the chest, for cough and other maladies. I hope they found wild strawberries in the midst of their escape, found bits of forest sweetness as they moved toward the future that led to my parents, that led to me and my siblings and our children and all the generations yet to come, some with sugar in the blood, some not. I saw the strawberry leaves tender across the forest floor, and I wanted to live.)
